Travel Guide - St. Louis
Nicknamed the 'Gateway City' St Louis is situated on what is seen by many as the divide between the Eastern and Western parts of America. Visiting this charming city is a little like stepping back in time as the influences from the French settling there in 1699 are still present both in the architecture and the names for of some local places such as the River Des Peres.
Whilst in St Louis there are plenty of things to see and do. If you are a fan of the steamboat era you can take a trip on one going down the Mississippi which is located to the East of the city. This is a fantastic way of soaking up the scenery as you pass prairie land and low valleys. You might even get to spot on the natural springs that are dotted along the riverbank.
For those of you that like to mix their trips with a little culture should pay a visit to the St Louis Art Museum that is the home to some of the most famous artists in the world. Included within its exhibits there are examples of paintings by Van Gogh, Rembrandt and Picasso, as well as numerous other examples of priceless art.
You can also go to the Cathedral Basilica of St Louis, one of the many churches that are in St Louis. More commonly known as the 'New Cathedral', this church was built in Romanesque and Byzantine styles and is amazing to look at. In fact no visit to St Louis is complete without seeing this stunning building and of course taking some photos to show your friends back home.
If you would prefer to do something that will be suitable for younger travellers then why not head for the St Louis Zoological Park. As well as the many animals there it is also the most visited zoo in America and it has many exhibits that are animal friendly. For those of you who are not phased by creepy crawlies there is even an insectarium for you to view. Admission to the zoo is free, which means going there will not break the bank.
St Louis is also home to some quite unusual wild animals, as well as the usually urbanised creatures such as squirrels and rabbits there are also coyotes - so watch out for them! In the parks of St Louis there is an abundance of wild birds such as the Great Blue Heron and the Great Egret so any budding bird watchers should take time out and see what they can spot.
St Louis really is the ideal destination if you are looking for somewhere that is quiet and full of historical buildings and artefacts to visit at your own pace. Life here is not rushed and you will feel this as soon as you arrive. However if you would like to up the pace a little and you are a sports fan, you can watch a baseball game as St Louis is home to the St Louis Cardinals.
