Philadelphia or the City of Brotherly Love as it is sometimes known is a place that is often overlooked when considering destinations to take a break, and for no good reason. Visitors to this amazing city are struck by just how much there is to do there. Anyone who has an interest in history or science really should head there, and even if you don’t you will still find plenty to do.
Once you are in Philadelphia you will notice just how many museums there are, from the Wagner Free Institute of Science which is housed in a beautiful Victorian building to the Franklin Institute which was built in honour of Benjamin Franklin.
If museums aren’t really your thing then don’t worry, you can visit the place where Edgar Allan Poe once lived and take a walk around the authors house. Or maybe you would prefer to take it easy for a while and relax if that is the case then Fairmount Park is the perfect place to do so. Set in 9200 acres of unspoilt parkland with a waterfront this is the place to come if you want to have a picnic, take a stroll, take a bike ride or even do some pier side fishing - the choice is yours.
During the summer Philadelphia comes alive with a whole host of different festivals. During July and August there is a totally free film festival which shows some great films at Penn’s Landing. If you would like something a little more energetic then why not go to the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe where you can not only watch hundreds of different live shows but also participate with some of them.
Fans of the movies will want to stop off at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and have their photo taken on the steps which were made famous in Rocky. Or you can have a photo taken next to the Rocky statue which is now back situated near to the steps make sure you take your camera!
Baseball fans can get their sports fix by heading to the Citizens Bank Park - home of the Philadelphia Phillies. You can be in the crowd cheering as the home team hit another winner, and you can treat yourself to some of the great hotdogs and jumbo cokes that are a hit with sports fans.
If you like to shop then head to the Shops at Liberty Place for everything from designer clothes to holiday souvenirs. Bargain hunters should head for South Street and snap up some great goods at low prices, or why not spend a few hours enjoying the Italian Market which is a must for anyone travelling to Philadelphia.
