Travel Guide - Niagara Falls
Situated on the boarder between New York and Ontario in Canada, the Niagara Falls are one of the most stunning sights in the world. These gigantic waterfalls are truly awe inspiring and a trip to see them is a once in a lifetime experience that you really should not miss out on. On the American side of the falls there are the American Falls and on the Canadian side there are the Horseshoe Falls which are separated by Goat Island.
There is also a smaller falls - Bridal Veil Falls which is separated from the main falls by Luna Island. Goat Island can be reached by foot or car as it has two bridges which connect it to mainland New York and is an uninhabited island which has some beautiful flora and fauna. It is also one of the best places to capture some amazing views and photographs of the falls and surrounding area. So remember to take your camera!
Whilst at Niagara Falls you will be astounded at the sheer size of them, they are not very high but they are wide and as you step out and see them for the very first time you will not fail to be impressed. A staggering 6,000,000 cubic feet of water will, during high flow, will pass over the waterfalls each and every minute. To harness the force of the water and use it there has been a hydroelectric plant on the falls for many years to generate and transmit power from this mighty natural source. Visitors can take a look around the plant and see for themselves how the power of the falls is used to create electricity.
Niagara Falls are also the scene for many films, most notably Superman 2 in which the hero flies over the falls to catch Lois Lane and take her away to safety. Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End also used the falls in scenes depicting the end of the world. See if you can work out where it was filmed.
Whilst at the falls you can stay on dry land and take in the amazing views or you could be more adventurous and go on the famous Maid of the Mist boat trip around the whirlpools at the bottom of the falls where you will be able to feel the strength of the water as it surges beneath you. There are also viewing platforms all around the perimeter of the falls, and if you are on the Canadian side you can go behind the Horseshoe Falls via a series of tunnels to see what it is like to be inside as the water crashes down.
Niagara Falls at night is also worth seeing as there are colored lights behind the falls which come alive after dark. It is like something out of a film as you watch the swirling water and listen to the thunder of the falls.
So if you would like to see sights that really will take your breath away you must visit the Niagara Falls and let them astound you. Visitors will talk about this site of natural beauty for years and years to come as once seen, never forgotten.
