Travel Guide - Boston
Boston is the capital city of Massachusetts and is a city that is full of history and the site of many historical events. In fact go anywhere in Boston and you will be face to face with examples of historic events from the past 400 years. Probably the most famous these events and the one which Boston is most well known for is the Boston Tea Party. This was a protest by American colonists and was directed against the English Government and the colonists smashed tea bricks on board ships belonging to the British East India Company. In fact this event was thought to have been the catalyst for the American Revolution, visit Boston today and you can take a look round the Boston Tea Party Museum.
Those of you who are interested in the performing arts will want to take in a performance at the Boston Opera House which is a spectacular building and has been described as 'a jewel box of an opera house' due to its small yet perfectly formed size. If opera is not really to your taste you will find something that suits you in one of the many other theatres and arts centres.
For anyone with more radical tastes you might be surprised to know that Boston has quite an influence on the punk scene and many recent ska-punk have originated from there. Bands such as The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and the Dropkick Murphys began their musical careers in Boston and there are clubs and bars which are dedicated to playing music from this genre of music. For a night out that is a little more sedate why not head to the Bull and Finch Pub which is the outdoor for the television series Cheers. Who knows you might even be able to get a photo standing next to the iconic frontage!
If you are travelling with younger children then you must visit the Boston Children’s Museum which is packed full of things to entertain, amuse and educate children - and a few adults too! Or why not go to the New England Aquarium which has some fantastic exhibits which include a tank which contains its own simulation of a coral reef and the Simons IMAX cinema. This aquarium is so big and with so many things to see you will need to make sure you have plenty of time to go round otherwise you will miss out on seeing some great aquatic life.
After all this sightseeing you will want to rest for a while and recharge your batteries and there is nowhere better to do this than at one of the many restaurants or bars that Boston has to offer. With Boston being close to the water there are heavy seafood influences in the cuisine and shellfish are always on the menu and freshly caught that day! Add to this the traditional drink of rum and you have the perfect combination of food and drink for any fisherman. Boston really is ideal if you want to take a trip to a place where you can do as much or as little as you want yet still be in a bustling and welcoming city.
