Travel Guide - Augusta
Fans of golf will know all about Augusta as it is home to the Augusta National Golf Club which is more commonly known as the place where The Masters golf tournament is held each and every spring. As a result when the tournament is running Augusta can become very crowded so if you are looking for a more relaxed holiday it is best to travel when before or after it begins.
Golf is not all that Augusta is popular for, it is also where the disc golf championships are held. Disc golf is strangely named as it involves throwing a disc at a target or into a basket. It is sometimes called Frisbee Golf and is really fun to do for any age group. So why not give this peculiar sport a try whilst you are here, who knows you might turn out to be a star!
Wildlife lovers should pay a visit to the Phinizy Swamp nature Park which has swamps, wetland, nature walks and streams which spread for miles. Make sure that you pack your walking shoes and a camera to capture some of the stunning views and wildlife that inhabit the 1100 acres of natural swampland. Who knows you might see turtles, bobcats or even an alligator.
Augusta is also home to some amazing churches and anyone with an interest in religion or architecture should check them out. The Sacred Heart Cultural Centre is a wonderful example of a church that was saved back in the 1970s, it was consecrated in 1901 and is now used for events that benefit the local community. Visitors are awe struck by the outside of the building which has two red brick spires, marble columns that are a creamy white and highly jewelled stained glass windows, it really does look a treasure.
Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church is a little more traditional and has a large graveyard which has some beautiful monuments and is ideal to spend a little quiet time in.
After dark falls Augusta is quite a change from the day light hours with many different bars and restaurants which open and offer fine cuisine and drinks. If you like jazz head to The Soul bar for some great live music, drinks and a bite to eat. Or maybe you would like to spend an evening relaxing in the old charm of an English tavern - if this is the case you should go to the Surrey Tavern which is beautifully decorated in dark wooden beams and looks as though you have just come in from a days cricket. Whatever you are looking for you will be able to find it in Augusta.
If you would like to take home an engraved souvenir of your trip you should go to Merry Times one of the many stores in Augusta where the staff will be more than happy to help you personalise a memento of your stay.
So for a holiday that is steeped in old American charm with plenty of open spaces and fun things to see and do go to Augusta and you will be glad you did.
